On Wednesday night, 8 players of Nigerian descent were drafted by the NBA, six in the first round and two in the second round. The draft originally scheduled for the June 25 had to be pushed forward resulting from the effect of the coronavirus.
Miami heat picked Precious Achiuwa who is a Nigerian born and bred. The 21-year old grew up playing football in the city of Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Nigeria before he moved to USA as a teenager.
Precious Achiuwa became the third Nigerian-born player drafted in the first round since 2000, while Udoka Adubuike (Utah Jazz) came next in this prestigious list. Thus, making it the first time two Nigerian-born players are picked in the first round of the same draft.
Nigerian-born Udoka Azubuike (21-year old) was discovered by a Lagos-based basketball academy called Raptors. The 7ft tall player is the second Nigerian-born player on the list.
Other players also selected in the first round draft are; Zeke Nnaji (Denver Nuggets) Onyeka Okongwu (Atlanta Hawks), and Desmond Bane (Boston Celtics), Isaac Okoro (Cleveland Cavaliers), born in Atlanta Georgia to Nigerian parents.
Selected in the second round are Daniel Oturu (LA Clippers) and Jordan Nwora (Milwaukee Bucks).
