Former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju has urged Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze not to give up despite losing out on 2019 CAF Youth Player of the Year award to Achraf Hakimi.
The award ceremony which held in Egypt on Tuesday evening saw Morocco and Borrusia Dortmund defender Hakimi pip Super Eagles duo of Osimhen and Chukwueze to the award.
Reacting to this, Adepoju was positive. “No CAF Youth Player of the Year, no problem! dear Samuel Chukwueze and Victor Osimhen come on, cheer up because the future belongs to you. Never give up!” the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner wrote on his Twitter handle.
Another former Nigeria international Joseph Dosu reacted to the omission of Super Eagles players from the FIFpro Africa’s Best XI.
“This CAF award…….Hmmmmmmm, AFRICA 11, no Nigerian player, even top goal scorer Jude Odion Ighalo not in the list,” Dosu, a gold medal winner at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic game, queried on his Facebook page.
Wilfried Ndidi was expected to make the list, but saw his spot go to Senegal’s Idrissa Gueye.
Also AFCON 2019 top scorer Odion Jude Ighalo failed to make the list, missing out on a striker’s spot to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mohammed Salah.
It was not an entirely bad night for Nigerian football though, as Asisat Oshoala was crowned the Best Female Player in Africa, winning the award for the fourth time.
