With the Group Stage of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations dispensed with, the 16 advancing teams now have their next opponent, as well as a potential path to the final, confirmed.
The tournament tree throws up some interesting possibilities, most notably an epic semi-final clash between North African arch-rivals Egypt and Algeria. A quarter-final meeting of two pre-tournament favourites, in Senegal and Morocco, is also in the offing.
Madagascar’s fairytale run hands them a tie with DR Congo, while Mali have been rewarded for winning Group E with Cote d’Ivoire as their Round of 16 opponent.
A complacent, lax showing in their final group game condemned Nigeria to second place in Group B, and they will need to get the better of bitter rivals Cameroon in order to further their AFCON ambitions in Egypt.
Ghana came alive in the second half of their final Group F match against Guinea-Bissau, thereby securing top spot. They face Tunisia, to whom they have never lost in a competitive fixture, and will be confident of their chances against Alain Giresse’s side, which have yet to win a game or score from open play at the AFCON.
