D’Tigress began their AfroBasket 2019 campaign with a commanding 75-26 win over Tunisia in the opener at the Dakar Arena in Senegal on Saturday.
Power forward Evelyn Akhator stole the show with an impressive display for the D’Tigress, posting 13 points, two assists and 10 rebounds in the 15 minutes she played. Atonye Nyingifa got 12 points and four rebounds as well, as Nigeria led all quarters for a comfortable win.
The defending champions started the game brightly with a 14-8 win in the first quarter to set the tone for what would be a humiliating defeat for their North African opponents.
The second quarter was much easier as the Nigerian ladies claimed a huge 26-4 win into half-time. They won the remaining two quarters 17-5 and 18-11 to begin their campaign in Senegal in emphatic fashion.
“We still need to get better because this is the AfroBasket. This game was like bread and butter because the main meal is yet to come so we have to keep fighting and play hard,” Akhator said after the game.
The defending champions will face Cameroon next on Tuesday. The AfroBasket will serve as a qualifying tournament for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
