Defending champions Nigeria have reached the quarter-finals of the 2019 AfroBasket following a 106-39 humbling of Cameroon at the Dakar Arena on Tuesday.
After the emphatic 75-26 defeat of Tunisia in the tournament opener, D’Tigress returned with yet another scintillating performance to brush aside their Cameroonian counterparts in a straightforward win to book a quarter-final spot.
The impressive offensive style of the reigning African champions was evident from the start as they comfortably won the opening quarter 21-7. In the second quarter, the Nigerian ladies went up a level, notching 28 more points to Cameroon’s 16 and taking a 49-23 score into half-time.
After the break, it was an absolute stroll for Coach Otis Hughley Jr’s side. The third quarter ended in a 23-10 win for D’Tigress and in the final quarter, they saw out a 34-6 win to complete the rout. The final score was 106-39, a 67 points difference which means the reigning African champions are the only side to have passed the 100-point mark in the competition so far.
In the outstanding team performance, captain Adaora Elonu, Promise Amukamara, Aisha Balarabe, and Ify Ibekwe all finished with 14 points while Ezinne Kalu had 12 points in the record-setting win.
Nigeria’s D’Tigress will now look to continue their imperious form in the next round of the AfroBasket as they keep pushing for a successful defence of their title.
