Reigning African champions D’Tigresses have qualified for the semi-finals of the AfroBasket 2019 competition after a comfortable 79-46 win over DR Congo on Thursday afternoon.
D’Tigresses have been perfect in the tournament so far, first beating Tunisia 75-26 before a dominant 106-39 win over Cameroon secured their spot in the final eight.
The Nigerians continued their dominance over their Congolese counterparts, having won the previous five meetings. They faced little resistance from their opposition, resulting in yet another routine win.
The champions started the game slowly, but eventually won the first quarter comfortably, 22-9. The second quarter was much different as the Congolese gave a good account of themselves despite losing 16-14 as Nigeria went into the half-time break leading 38-23.
After the break, the D’Tigresses were in beast mode in the third quarter and won 23-9. The final quarter was close but the Nigerians won once again 18-14, for an overall scoreline of 79-46 in favour of Coach Otis Hughley Jr’s side.
Ezinne Kalu was Nigeria’s top performer vs DR Congo, scoring a game-high 17 points, 2 rebounds & 2 assists while Victoria Macaulay also contributed a further 14 points.
Impressively, D’Tigresses have yet to lose a single quarter in the tournament so far. Nigeria will now face either Mali or Cote d’Ivoire at the semi-final stage of the competition.
