Tanzania’s football governing body Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has parted ways with Emmanuel Amuneke following a dismal performance at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

The Taifa Stars were knocked out early in the tournament after they finished bottom of Group C. They lost 2-0 to Senegal in their opener, and then a 3-2 defeat to neighbours Kenya confirmed their exit, before a 3-0 defeat to Algeria in their final group game in Cairo.

Former TFF Technical Director, Ammy Ninje had initially hinted that the former Nigeria international would be retained as coach. However, the decision was made after the performance of the side was reviewed, eventually leading to his dismissal.

A statement was made available on the TFF official website confirming his departure.

“The Tanzania Football Association (TFF) and the national team coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, have reached a joint agreement to terminate the contract between us.

“TFF will announce the Tanzania coach who will lead the national team through the CHAN (African Nations Championship) matches. Tanzania coaches will be announced after the Emergency Committee meeting on July 11, 2019.”

Amuneke won the FIFA U17 World Cup with Nigerian in 2015. He then made history in 2019, leading the East African country to their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) appearance in 39 years.
