Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has handed a recall to PAOK midfield enforcer Anderson Esiti for September’s friendly against Ukraine.
The 25-year-old comes into the team as a replacement for Leicester City man Wilfred Ndidi, who sustained a thigh injury in the Foxes’ Premier League trip to Chelsea on August 18.
Ndidi missed out last weekend as Leicester claimed a first victory of the season away at newly-promoted Sheffield United, but is expected to be in contention for selection this weekend. However, Rohr has elected to reward Esiti, who has been an ever-present in the Champions League qualifying rounds for Greek champions PAOK, with a call-up.
Esiti has not featured for Nigeria since 2016, when he made a substitute appearance in Rohr’s second match in charge of the national team: a 2-1 away victory over Zambia in World Cup qualifying.
The former Gent man made his international debut in 2015 in a Nations Cup qualifier against Chad in Kaduna, and is now in line to earn only his third cap for the Super Eagles.
Also added to the squad is Lokomotiv Moscow defender Bryan Idowu, who makes a return after a year-long absence.
