A third goal of the season for Samuel Chukwueze was the sole streak of light for Villarreal as they succumbed to a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Celta Vigo.
The Yellow Submarine fell behind at Estadio la Ceramica after a first half that had seen the hosts dominate proceedings. Danish winger Pione Sisto saw his low finish bounce over the line somewhat fortuitously via the outstretched leg of goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo nine minutes after the restart.
Villarreal were level just five minutes later however, as winger Chukwueze met Xavier Quintilla’s cut-back with an emphatic finish from right about the penalty spot. It was the 20-year-old’s first goal since September’s drubbing of Real Betis, and his second in two games following his goal against Lesotho a week prior.
Celta regained the lead in somewhat fortunate circumstances in the 79th minute, as Iago Aspas was on hand to convert a free-kick at the back post via a deflection and the upright.
The talismanic captain then made the points safe late in stoppage time to give Celta their first win in six games.
Sunday marked only a seventh league start so far this term for Chukwueze.
