Samuel Chukwueze delivered a virtuoso performance off the bench to help Villarreal to a 5-1 victory over Real Betis on Friday night.

The Nigeria international began the game on the bench, and watched his side race into a first-half lead through Karl Toko-Ekambi’s header from a corner, only to be pegged back just three minutes into the second period.

Chukwueze was then summoned off the bench, replacing Moi Gomez just before the hour mark. The 20-year-old won a penalty nine minutes after his introduction, with Betis defender Zouhair Feddal the culprit. Up stepped Santi Cazorla to convert and regain the lead for the hosts.

In the 76th minute, the Yellow Submarine doubled their advantage. Chukwueze was again involved, part of a flowing move that saw the ball go through the entire frontline, before Toko-Ekambi swept the ball home.

Gerard Moreno made it 4-1 two minutes into stoppage time, but there was still time for Chukwueze to further ice the cake, and he helped himself, cutting in from the right after a run from halfway before placing a low shot past Betis goalkeeper Joel Robles, off the post and in.

So far this season, the Nigeria international has been in decent form, contributing two goals and an assist to Villarreal’s 18-goal league haul, the highest in La Liga this term.
