Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has eulogized goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi for his man-of-the-match display against Orlando Pirates in the PSL’s Soweto Derby over the weekend.
The highly-criticized Nigerian shot-stopper made six incredible saves to help his side sail narrowly over their city rivals courtesy of Lebogang Manyama’s goal at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
Having seen the former Warri Wolves man single-handedly win his side all three points, Middendorp was full of praise for Akpeyi, who has reacted in excellent fashion to a barrage of criticism early on in his Chiefs career.
“We have seen a great performance from Daniel Akpeyi over months. It’s unbelievable character,” said Middendorp.
“If you come into a club where first-choice is injured at that time and now coming back at any time you get pressurized… ‘another one should play, another one should play’.
“It’s an incredible performance under these circumstances, what we see week in and week out from Daniel Akpeyi.”
Akpeyi, 33, has continued between the sticks for the league leaders despite the return of club captain Itumeleng Khune and has done well to come good for them with the title race heating up.
