Nigerian wrestling star Odunayo Adekuoroye defeated Ukrainian Tetyana Kit 10-0 in the final of the 57kg category at the Yasar Dogu Ranking Series event in Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday.
In a match between two medalists at the World Championships the year before, reigning Commonwealth champion Adekuoroye defeated the 2016 European championships silver medalist to claim the gold medal at the Bağcılar Olimpic Sports Hall.
Pantera Dancer as she is fondly called, Adekuoroye started the tournament in dominant fashion defeating Giullia Rodrigues (Brazil) 15-2 in the second round. she then overcame Ecuador’s Lissette Alexandra Castillo 10-0 in the final eight before a close 6-3 victory over Russia’s Olga Khoroshavtseva to reach the final.
The 25-year-old wrestler, ranked no. 5 in the world, is expected to get more points for her victory in Istanbul ahead of the 2019 World Championships in Kazakhstan in September.
Meanwhile, Blessing Oborududu defeated Alina Makhynia (Ukraine) to claim bronze in the 68kg category third-place match.
The 9-time African champion and No.12 ranked wrestler in the world Oborududu defeated Germany’s Nadine Weinauge 12-3, as well as Kadriye Aksoy of Turkey 6-0 to reach the semi-finals, before a disappointing 8-1 defeat to Canada’s Danielle Lappage.
The 4-day ranking series event is relevant for acquiring ranking points ahead of the World Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan in September.
