Nigeria’s D’Tigresses have successfully defended their African title, beating Senegal 60-55 in a tense final on Sunday night.
Both teams went into the showpiece with perfect records. D’Tigresses had been on a different level, beating their opponents comfortably with eye-catching performances. The Senegalese on their part had a similarly smooth ride bar the semi-final where they had to dig deep in the second half to beat a spirited Mozambique.
Nigeria, reigning African champions and Senegal, the side with the most titles, met for the second time in a row in the AfroBasket final at the packed-crowd Dakar Arena.
The Nigerian ladies had been an offensive side all through the tournament and they carried on in the same vein against the hosts. The first quarter ended 14-10 in favour of Nigeria and they also won the second quarter 18-14, to take an eight-point lead to the break.
After the interval, D’Tigresses held on to their lead, winning the third quarter 16-13 but the Senegalese side took the final quarter 18-12. Otis Hughley Jr’s team however held on to win 60-55 for a second successive African title.
