A quick-fire double from Chidera Ejuke condemned VVV-Venlo to only a second home league defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon in the Eredivisie.
Heerenveen roared into the lead as early as the eighth minute. Sherel Floranus won the ball on the right wing, and cut it back from the byline into the path of Ejuke on the edge of the six-yard box, who made no mistake.
Five minutes later, it was 2-0; again, the result of an opposition error. Venlo goalkeeper Thorsten Kirschbaum mishit what should have been a routine clearance straight to the 21-year-old, but Ejuke still had a lot to do. His finish, however, was masterful: curled home from distance to leave Kirschbaum scrambling.
The hosts were afforded a lifeline in the 25th minute with the award of a penalty, but striker Haji Wright was unable to beat Warner Hahn from the spot, preserving Heerenveen’s two-goal advantage.
The Frisians would cap proceedings with a third goal three minutes from time, as Jens Odgaard applying the coup de grace to secure a second win of the season for Johnny Jansen’s side, who have so far this season struggled to turn draws into wins.
Ejuke, who joined the club in the summer from Norwegian side Valerenga, has taken quickly to the Eredivisie, weighing in with four goals in eight appearances so far this term.
