Top Finnish side HJK Helsinki have announced the departure of Nigerian International Elderson Echiejile from the club. The club’s Twitter handle confirmed the former Bendel Insurance defender’s departure.
“HJK and Elderson Echiejile have ended their contract and he will not continue with the HJK team. We thank Mr Elderson for his contribution to the team. The club wishes him well in the future. Thanks, Eddy!” the Finnish Champions tweeted.
During the short stint, the 31-year-old scored two goals in five games played for the Veikkausliiga side. Echiejile, who enjoyed four successful years at Sporting Braga before returning to France to join principality club AS Monaco, joined the Klubi three months ago after several short spells at Standard Liege, Sporting Gijon, Sivasspor and Cercle Brugge.
The Nigeria International last played for the Super Eagles in a pre-world Cup friendly match against Czechia in June 2018, but missed out on the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad in Egypt. He will now be in search of a new club ahead of the new season.
Echiejile was a pivotal member of the Super Eagles’ squad under the late Stephen Keshi that was victorious at the 2013 AFCON in South Africa.
