Africa’s representatives at the 2019 ITTF Team World Cup, Nigeria and Egypt have been placed in tough groups in the first round of the competition in Tokyo.
African champions Nigeria will play against World and Olympic Champions China on November 6, before facing Chinese Taipei in the second group A game two days later.
In the women’s category, Egypt have China and Ukraine to battle with for a spot in the next round.
The top two teams in each of the four groups will progress to the next round of the tournament in both categories.
Nigeria’s contingent to the tournament is led by Aruna Quadri, joined by African games gold medallist Olajide Omotayo, Bode Abiodun, Segun Toriola and Azeez Solanke.
African women’s champion Egypt have Dina Meshref, Yousra Helmy, Farah Abdel-Aziz, Reem El-Eracky and Marwa Alhodaby in their tournament roster.
The five-day ITTF event holding at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium is a test event ahead of the Olympics in the same city next year.
