England lashed Japan with two unanswered goals to secure top spot in Group D at the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. The match was played on Wednesday June 19 at the Allianz Rivera Stadium.

Eight minutes in, Keira Walsh gave away a free kick in a promising area for Japan. The resulting kick was tipped over the bar by English goalie Karen Bardsley leading to a corner. Yokoyama then sent in a delightful corner which was headed straight to the arms of the Manchester City stopper Bardsley.

The English team took the lead 14 minutes into the match with a good pass by Georgia Stan who spotted a flash run from her striker Ellen White and she slid the ball through even though she lost her balance. Ellen White composed herself to slot the ball home, and yes it was a GOAL!!!

The second goal which came completely against the run of play was also scored by Ellen White in the 84th minute of the game as she slotted the ball that was played in by Carney into the back of the net.

The victory for the lionesses made them move top of the group D table, having won the three of their games and will now face Cameroon in one of the last 16 fixtures. This is the first time they have gotten to this stage of the competition.
