Super Eagles Captain John Mikel Obi has signed a two-year deal with Turkish side Trabzonspor, with an option for a further year.
The Turkish Super Lig side announced the signing of the former Chelsea midfielder on a permanent deal after the expiration of his short-term deal with English Championship side, Middlesbrough.
A statement from the club reads: “A two-year (plus an additional year) agreement was signed with the captain of the Nigerian national team, John Obi Mikel, for a free transfer to our Club .”
The Nigerian star has been without a club since he left Middlesbrough at the end of the 2018/2019 season, but will now start a new adventure at the Senol Gunes Stadium at least until 2021.
Mikel’s arrival will add vital experience to the Black Sea Storm’s midfield as they campaign in the Europa League next season. In addition, the move will see him play alongside compatriots Ogenyi Onazi and Anthony Nwakaeme in the Turkish top flight.
Mikel is presently with the Super Eagles for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He featured in Sunday’s shock 2-0 defeat to Madagascar in his side’s final Group B game, playing 58 minutes.
