Nigeria forward Josh Maja got Bordeaux’s goal in their 1-1 draw with Saint-Etienne in their Ligue 1 encounter on Sunday.
Maja, who made his debut for the Super Eagles last year against Ukraine, thought he had won it for the hosts when he opened the scoring for the visitors midway through the second half, but the hosts drew level moments later through Denis Bouanga’s strike.
After a dominant first half from the hosts, it was Les Girondins who went in front against the run of play through Maja’s smart finish. Arsenal-bound William Saliba failed to clear his lines after Samuel Kalu’s cross deflected and looped into the penalty area, and the 21-year-old attacker profited from that mix-up to smash home the opener.
The visitors led for just three minutes as Ryad Boudebouz and Bouanga linked up for the home side’s equaliser. The 25-year-old Gabon international nodded home Boudebouz’s perfect cross for his ninth league goal of the campaign.
Both sides could not find a winner as they shared the spoils at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. With the result, Bordeaux stay 12th while Saint-Etienne drop one spot down to 17th with 30 points from 28 games.
Maja has scored six league goals and contributed two assists in 21 appearances this season for Paulo Sousa’s side.
