Nigeria forward Josh Maja scored a hattrick for Bordeaux in a 6-0 demolition of hapless Nimes on Tuesday night in Ligue 1 action.
Maja, 20, scored the opening goal in the 24th minute, latching on to Youssouf Sabaly’s through ball and finishing coolly after he was played onside by Nimes’ defence. Though it was initially flagged offside by the assistant referee, the goal was given after consultation with VAR.
Eight minutes before half-time Girondins added a second. Maja again punished Nimes with sharp movement off the ball, and was put through on goal by Yacine Adli. He steadied himself before firing past the opponent’s goalkeeper to give the home side a 2-0 halftime lead.
Four more goals for Bordeaux in the second half at the Matmut Atlantique ensured the visitors would leave with their winless run of matches stretched to nine.
Maja first completed his treble eight minutes after the break, holding off his marker before firing high into the net.
Moments later, Maja set up Nicolas de Preville as Bordeaux broke through on a swift counter, and the latter went past the goalkeeper to put the ball into the back of the net. Brazil’s Otavio scored a late brace to complete the total annihilation of the Crocodiles.
The victory takes Paulo Sousa’s men third on the log with 26 points from 16 games. They face Olympique Marseille in their next Ligue 1 fixture on Sunday.
Maja has now scored five league goals for Girondins this season.
