Turkish title challengers Trabzonspor have announced that John Mikel Obi has left the club by mutual consent.
The midfielder, who joined on a free transfer during the summer on a two-year deal, has left the club just few months into his contract.
The 32-year-old has been instrumental for the Black Sea Storms, making 19 appearances in the Super Lig on their way to the top of the table.
Neither Trabzonspor nor Mikel have given any reason for the player’s departure.
“The professional football player agreement between our company and John Obi Mikel on 30.06.2019 start date 31.05.2021 has been mutually terminated. With a mutual termination agreement, the football player gave up all his forward-looking receivables,” the club announced.
The former Chelsea midfielder recently criticized the management of the Turkish Super Lig for not suspending the league despite the spread of the coronavirus, stating that he did not feel comfortable playing football under the current conditions.
