Nigeria international defender Semi Ajayi scored at both ends in the 1-1 draw between West Brom and Leeds United on New Year’s Day.
Ajayi popped up with the opener in the second minute of the game to give his side the lead. Despite the efforts of the opposition defender to clear the ball off to safety, the referee’s wristwatch indicated that his flick from inside Leeds’ six-yard box had crossed the line, awarding a goal to the Nigerian.
The visitors then began to get a handle on proceedings and dominate possession, but the chances created by Marcelo Bielsa’s men could not produce a goal in the first half.
After the restart, Leeds finally saw their pressure pay off just seven minutes in, as Patrick Bamford’s header went in off Ajayi for the game’s second goal. Both sides pushed for a winner, but it never came and the points were shared in the end.
The result leaves Ajayi’s West Brom tied with Leeds at the top but second on goal difference, with both teams on 52 points after 26 games.
The 26-year-old Ajayi, who has been a regular feature in the Baggies team this season, has scored four league goals for them so far.
