Nasarawa United’s 3-0 home win against Katsina United was marred by news of the demise of defender Chineme Martins, who slumped during the match.
Martins collapsed in the second half with the hosts 2-0 up, and efforts were made to revive the player. However, the ambulance that was meant to convey him from the stadium to the hospital did little to help matters as it failed to start and needed to be pushed by five people, according to reports.
He was rushed to the Dalhatu-Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia where he was confirmed dead.
“We lost a player today against @fckatsinaunited. A great professional and a gentleman,” Nasarawa United confirmed on Twitter.
The League Management Committee, organizers of the NPFL, confirmed the death of the defender in a statement and demanded that an autopsy be carried out.
“The League Management Company (LMC) has confirmed the report of the death of Chineme Martins, a defender with Nasarawa United FC, who slumped during the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 23 against Katsina United in Lafia,” the LMC said in a statement on their website.
“It is hoped that the findings of the autopsy would inform subsequent measures if any that has not been addressed by the existing standard procedure.”
