After a waiting period of over two weeks, Nigerian sprinter, Divine Oduduru made his professional debut this evening at the IAAF Diamond League (DL) in Monaco.
Oduduru, who was supposed to make his debut at last week’s DL in Lausanne but couldn’t get into the Swiss city due to visa issues was pitted against a star-studded field that included the likes of reigning World Champion Justin Gatlin, Commonwealth Games Champion Akani Simbine and Diamond Trophy holder in the men’s 200m Noah Lyles.
Sandwiched between Lyles and Gatlin in lane 4, Oduduru clocked 10.26s to finish eight, with Gatlin bringing his wealth of experience to the fore to clinch the win in 9.91, just a smidgen ahead of Lyles.
It will be recalled that Oduduru signed a contract with kitting company Puma during the week after he gave up his scholarship to turn pro.
However, it remains to be seen if Oduduru will be on the start list at the next stop of the Diamond League which is set to take place in London on Saturday, July 20th.
