Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare will set her sights on winning the much-coveted IAAF Diamond Trophy and its accompanying US$50,000 winner’s top prize when she takes to the track at the Weltklasse meet in Zurich on Thursday, August 29th.
The Zurich leg of the Diamond league is the 13th leg of the 14-leg Diamond league series, as athletes have earned the right to battle it out for the series crown in a championship-style format adopted two years ago which has seen the first 12 Diamond League meetings of the season employed as qualifiers for this week’s finals.
Having racked up enough points to qualify for the final, Okagbare will come up against Elaine Thompson, the double Olympic Champion and world leader at 22.00. Two-time world champion Dafne Schippers, European champion Dina Asher-Smith are also on the start-list.
Equally, Olympic 400m champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo, who will be chasing a third Diamond Trophy in the event, will be look to put spanner in the works of Okagbare. She’s clocked 22.09 this season and arrives unbeaten in 2019.
