Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare will be in contention for the $50,000 prize at stake at the Zurich leg of the Diamond League final on August 29th after she secured enough points in her third 200m race of the Diamond League season to remain in the top 8 after placing fifth in Birmingham.
Okagbare, the Diamond league appearance record holder went into the race with her position in the final uncertain, but the 2014 Commonwealth Games double gold medalist re-affirmed her spot at the Alexander stadium as she clocked 22.83s.
After picking up 14 points in her two 200m races this season, Okagbare’s fifth place in Birmingham gave her another four points, bringing her total to 18 points.
Other qualifiers include Briton Dina Asher-Smith, Rio 2016 Olympic Champion Elaine Thompson, 2017 World Champion Dafne Schippers and 2018 Diamond trophy winner, Shaunae Miller-Uibo.
Elsewhere, Sprint-hurdler Tobi Amusan clawed her way back into third in the final of the women’s 100m Hurdles, clocking 12.71s in the process. 2015 World Champion, Danielle Williams won the race in a Meeting Record of 12.46s.
