Nigeria international Cecilia Okoye has announced her retirement from basketball. She will not feature for Nigeria’s D’Tigress at the 2019 FIBA Afrobasket Women in Senegal next month.

In a touching message posted on her Instagram account on Wednesday, the forward made her retirement known and thanked the fans for their support.

“I have learnt a lot from these years, from the good and the bad; I’ve had the opportunity to meet amazing folks who’ve changed my life for the better.

“I have had the opportunity to see the world for free, was given a chance to represent the Nigerian nation, and there’s so much more I’m grateful for and can’t wait to see what life has in store for me after basketball. Thank you to those who rooted for me through it all,” reads Okoye’s post.

The 27-year-old forward won the 2017 Afrobasket in Mali playing a major role in the triumph. She also won bronze at the 2017 FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women in Angola with First Bank Basketball Club.

Okoye was part of the D’Tigress team at the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Spain last year and recently was on the books of  BBC Etzella Ettelbruck in the Luxemburg basketball league.
