Nigeria U-23 international Olabiran Muyiwa scored on his debut in the opening weekend of the new Russian Premier League season against Zenit Saint Petersburg on Sunday.
The champions edged a narrow 2-1 win over Olabiran’s newly-promoted side FC Tambov at the Gazprom Arena. The Zenitchiki were in cruise control after goals from Aleksandr Erokhin and Artem Dzyuba put them in the driving seat, before Olabiran came through with his own moment of magic to grab a consolation.
It was a historic goal for his six-year-old side, being Tambov’s first-ever top-flight league goal.
After a goalless first half, Zenit got two quick goals through Erokhin and Dzyuba in two minutes to go 2-0 up. Tambov coach Alexander Grigoryan then sent on the 20-year-old in the 56th minute for Anton Kilin. Benito would go ahead to justify his involvement; going on a strong run, leaving both his markers for dead and firing past Zenit keeper Andrey Lunyov for a well-taken goal with 19 minutes to go.
Olabiran was in superb form during the pre-season friendly games, notching a total of four goals in five games during his side’s tour of Belarus. The former Luch Minsk man scored two goals in as many games en route to Tambov’s incredible promotion to the topflight, but has now matched half of that in just his first game of the new season.
Up next for Olabiran and his teammates is an away game against Lokomotiv Moscow in week two of the 2019/2020 Russian Premier League season.
