Nigerian international goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has secured a move to Sparta Rotterdam on a free transfer from German Bundesliga outfit Fortuna Düsseldorf.
The move, which is subject to passing a medical, will see the youngster join the Dutch team on a two-year contract with the option of an additional two years at Sparta’s discretion. The 20-year-old, who holds both German and Nigerian passports, made his international debut for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a November 2019 friendly against Brazil.
He will face significant competition for a place in the starting 11 in the form of former Ajax keeper Benjamin Van Leer, who was brought in to replace injured Tim Coremans after first-choice keeper Ariel Harush left Sparta on a free transfer.
Sparta director Henk van Stee, who was very excited to have secured the services of the Nigerian, said the club has brought in a personality with great talent and potential. “He had a lot of interest from several clubs in different countries, but he believes he can take the next step at Sparta.”
