Victor Osimhen will not be feeling the pressure of his hefty transfer fee when he takes to the field for new club Napoli.
The Nigeria international was acquired from French side Lille in an 80 million euro deal that not only broke the African transfer record, but also made him Partenopei’s club record signing.
Osimhen has since joined up with his new team mates in preseason training in Castel di Sangro and, in an introductory press conference on Wednesday, spoke of his excitement at being a part of the project under manager Gennaro Gattuso.
“I am proud and grateful to God to be here at Napoli, one of the most important clubs in the world,” the 22-year-old said. “I can’t wait to get on the pitch! I am honoured to wear the same shirt that one of the greatest ever wore – Diego Maradona. Not only him; players of the calibre of Hamsik, Cavani and Higuain have played here.
“I didn’t know I was the club’s record signing, but honestly, this fact doesn’t weigh on me much.”
Osimhen expressed his gratitude to Senegal international Kalidou Koulibaly, as well as Gattuso, whose inputs helped convince him to join the Azzurri.
“I spoke to Koulibaly on the phone before arriving, he spoke very highly of the city and the fans and I must say that he motivated me a lot.
“I also spoke to (Dries) Mertens, who really convinced me to sign for Napoli. Before signing the contract, I met Gattuso at the president’s home. The coach made me feel very important in this project, and it was at that moment that I realized that this is the right club for me.”
