Victor Osimhen scored twice on his debut to lead Lille’s to a 2-1 win over Nantes in Sunday’s Ligue 1 opener.
Osimhen moved to the Stade Pierre Mauroy earlier this month in a deal worth about €12 million from Belgian side RSC Charleroi, and wasted no time announcing his arrival to French football with well-taken goals in either half.
The 20-year-old was handed a starting berth by manager Christophe Galtier, and repaid the confidence only 19 minutes in. A clearance from the back by centre-back Jose Fonte put him through behind the Nantes defence and he controlled, held off his marker brilliantly and calmly slotted home to break the deadlock.
Lille took the lead into the break but after the restart they were pegged back when defender Zeki Celik turned the ball into his own net six minutes into the second half. With just ten minutes to go, Osimhen popped up with an emphatic finish to win it for Les Dogues and get their campaign off to the perfect start.
Osimhen scored 20 goals in all competitions last term at RSC Charleroi and will look to continue his form in Lille’s next game against Amiens on August 17.
