Nigeria international Jamilu Collins missed a penalty as SC Paderborn lost 2-1 at home to Mainz in Saturday’s Bundesliga action.
The 25-year-old, who hit the headlines last week for a rasping drive from all of 30 yards which beat Manuel Neuer in the Bayern Munich goal, spurned a great chance to be the hero for Paderborn and salvage a point late on.
The visitors had started the brighter of the two teams, Sweden international Robin Quaison converting in the 8th minute with Levin Oztunali the supplier.
That lead however only lasted six minutes, as Tunisia international Mohamed Drager’s fine delivery was finished off by midfielder Ben Zolinski.
Just after the half-hour mark, Mainz re-took the lead. Daniel Brosinski was the beneficiary of a foul by Collins on Oztunali inside the box, slotting home from the penalty spot to give the 05ers the lead going into the break.
Collins was then given the chance to make amends in dramatic circumstances 11 minutes from time. Having profited from the Nigeria international’s error, Brosinski then himself gave away a penalty, affording the hosts the chance to pull level. However, Mainz goalkeeper Robin Zentner stood firm to secure the win for his side, saving the left-back’s spot-kick.
Paderborn are still without a win in the Bundesliga this season, and now prop up the table having lost four games on the bounce.
