Nigeria international Emmanuel Dennis hit a famous double at the Bernabeu as Club Brugge drew 2-2 against Real Madrid on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League.
Dennis, who only last month made his international bow in a friendly against Ukraine, struck twice in the opening half to stun the home crowd and elicit boos as Philippe Clement’s side went in two goals ahead at the break.
Only nine minutes in, the Belgian champions went into the lead against the run of play. A long pass down the left flank found South Africa forward Percy Tau running clear, and he squared it across the penalty area for the run of Dennis. The 21-year-old stumbled at the crucial moment, but the ball rolled fortuitously past a wrong-footed Thibaut Courtois and in.
Thirty minutes later, Dennis intercepted a loose pass from Luka Modric in midfield and burst through the heart of the Madrid defence. Once again, he stumbled at the last, but was just able to scoop it over Courtois and into the back of the net for his second.
After the restart, he was denied a hat-trick, as substitute goalkeeper Alphonse Areola was off his line quicly to smother Dennis’ effort, after a mistake by Sergio Ramos allowed the forward to once again zip past the Real Madrid backline.
The hosts would roar back: Ramos stealing in to head home from close range and set up an interesting final 30 minutes. Dennis was substituted in the 71st minute, replaced by Lois Openda.
A second yellow card within six minutes for Brugge captain Rudd Vormer put the Belgian side in jeopardy, and from the resulting corner, Casemiro rose highest to head into the bottom corner and pull the game level with five minutes to play.
However, Brugge held on for a point, leaving Real Madrid without a win so far in the UEFA Champions League this term.
