Nigeria national team coach Gernot Rohr has hinted at a late call-up for Bordeaux forward Josh Maja ahead of September’s friendly against Ukraine.
The German, speaking with Le Point G, revealed he had spoken with the 20-year-old former Sunderland man about turning out for the Super Eagles.
“I have already started talking to him about the national team, absolutely,” said Rohr. “He is pretty positive because he did not play for the England U-20s.
“I have a lot of attackers, but it is possible that I call him up to go to Ukraine,” Rohr said
Though born in Lewisham, Maja has no international ties to the nation of his birth, and so would require no official change of nationality application through FIFA. So far this season, the former Sunderland youngster has made three substitute appearances for Girondins since joining in the summer, and he opened his account in Ligue 1 in a 1-1 draw with Montpelier on the 17th of August.
Rohr also implied there may be challenges with travel documentation for some of the players called up for the game against Ukraine.
“I was told that it was too late today at the visa level for players who do not have a European passport. But he (Maja) has one, because he’s also English, so he could eventually join us.”
Maja’s Bordeaux teammate, Samuel Kalu, was named in the squad for the September 10 friendly.
