The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday in front of fans at the Alexandria stadium in Egypt began their Afcon Nations Cup campaign on a winning note. The Gernot Rohr’s tutored side came into the game as favorites for the tie.
The Swallows gave the super eagles an early scare in the game when Cedric Amissi latched on a brilliant through-pass and blasted a sizzling shot that was well parried by Nigeria’s goalie Daniel Akpeyi. It took just 4 minutes of play for the heavy striker to announce his presence and justify his claim for first striker role when he latched on a beautifully played back heeled pass from Torino of Italy’s defender Ola Aina and made no mistakes in burying the ball home.
Both teams kept on pressing to add more goals to the game, but it was the eagles who held their own and bagged all 3 points from the first group game. Nigeria plays Guinea on Wednesday afternoon in the second round of matches on the group level.
The other opening game in the group saw Guinea hold Madagascar 2-2 after the Madagascans came from behind to overturn 1-0 first half loss.
The slim victory sees Nigeria seated on top of group B table with 3 points and goal difference of +1, while Guinea and Madagascar who shared the spoils are sitted in 2nd and 3rd positions with the swallows occupying
