Ugandan long distance runner Joshua Cheptegei is in the final list of male athlete of the year award. A list that comprised ten nominees was on Monday reduced to five by the Sports’ governing body.
Joshua broke world records at 5000m (12:35.36), 10,000m (26:11.00) and 5km on the roads (12:51). In addition, he was fourth at the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships on his debut over the distance
On December 5, the World Athletics Awards 2020 would be staged as a virtual event and streamed live on social media.
The five athletes who did not make the list are; Fellow Ugandan long distance runner, Jacob Kiplimo, Kenyan Timothy Cheruiyot, Donavan Brazier from USA and his compatriot Noah Lyles, and lastly Swedish discus thrower Daniel Stahl.
The finalists were picked by a three-way voting process; The World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family cast their votes via Email, while voting took place online via social media platforms for fans.
While the council vote comprised 50% of the result, the Athletics Family votes and Fan votes counted for 25% each. Voting closed on November 15.
Other four athletes nominated alongside Cheptegei are; Ryan Crouser – USA, Mondo Duplantis – Sweden, Johannes Vetter – Germany and Karsten Warholm – Norway.
