Nigerian Wrestler Blessing Onyebuchi won gold in the 70kg class to ensure Nigeria finished on a high at the inaugural Association of National Olympic Communities (ANOC) World Beach Games in Doha, Qatar.
The African champion beat Ecuador’s Rosangela Reasco 3-0 on the final day of the competition to win a historic gold for Nigeria.
It was a smooth sail for Onyebuchi all the way through to her triumph in the final.
The Edo State-born wrestler had defeated Ukraine’s Iryna Pasichnyk 3-2 in a thrilling semi-final clash, and in the previous rounds, Onyebuchi outmuscled Aysegul Ozbege of Turkey 4-0, before demolishing Brazil’s Aline Ferraira 3-0.
Nigeria’s other wrestler at the competition, Mercy Genesis in the 50kg class, narrowly lost 3-2 to Brazil’s Kamila Barbosa Vito Da Silva to pick a silver medal at the Beach Games.
Both wrestlers had met earlier in the group stage match, with the multiple African champion defeating Da Silva 4-2, but Genesis could not repeat such performance as she fell short in the final.
The inaugural event is a five-day tournament which began on October 11 and ended on October 16, featuring 36 events with about 97 participating countries.
