25-year-old Nigerian Midfielder James Igbekeme plying his trade with LaLiga’s Smartbank team Real Zaragoza has come out to shower praises on football in Spain.
The midfield maestro who recently renewed his contract till 2023, signed with the Los Blanquillos in 2018.
In an Interval with a sports journalist, He talked about life in the second tier of Spanish football since moving to Spain in 2018 from Gil Vincente of Portugal.
“The football in Portugal was more physical,” he says. “When I came to Spain, I saw that they played technically. Because of my fitness level, I think I adapted quickly to the football in Spain. In Spain the ball moves more than you run, so you need to adapt to that mentally. That was difficult at first, but I was able to adapt.”
Having made over 50 appearances for Zaragoza, Igbekeme aims to help his team who currently sits on 3rd position quality for the LaLiga Santander and he has said, it would be a dream come true for him.
It will be a thing of joy to see more Nigerians in the Spanish top-flight division as we have the likes of Samuel Chukwueze (Villarreal CF), Ramon Azeez (Granada CF), Oghenekaro Etebo (Getafe CF) and Kenneth Omeruo and Chidozie Awaziem (CD Leganes).
Finally, on playing for the Nigerian national team, Igbekeme is confident and He said: “It’s every young player’s dream to represent their country,”. “All I need is the chance. I think I will have a chance soon, but first I need to do my best in my team to make sure we go to LaLiga Santander. There, there are a lot of people watching and you have the chance to be called up by the national team.”
We hope to see and hear more from Igbekeme and Zaragoza soon and wish them luck in their quest for promotion to the LaLiga.
